"Fuck off dogbreath"

More details about Brogden's view of women.

Mr Brogden said yesterday his actions were in jest and made towards a journalist he had known for years. But this was not the case with Angela Cuming, a journalist with The Sun-Herald, who was present when the party moved to the Marble Bar.
Cuming said she approached Mr Brogden and asked him about his election chances.
"He then stopped me ... slipped one arm around the small of my back, leant down and said, 'Enough of that. Are you available?' I stumbled out some reply on the lines of, 'No, I have a boyfriend, thanks very much.'"
Until women learn to say "Fuck off dogbreath" or "If it's not 12 inches on the flop I'm not interested" (credited to my mate Moi) or "Like I want to see his willy" (credited to the girlchild's friend Jasmine, aged 10, who was flashed at) then we as women will continue to have to politely thank boorish, powerful, sexually predatory men every day of every week.

Helena Carr understands a man like Brogden and her right to be treated with respect and will not accept an apology from him. Rightly so. A powerful, self-assured woman knows what she is worth and Helena is one such woman. She knows that the only way to deal with men such as Brogden is to shine a big bright spotlight on their behavior and name it up for what it is.

My girlchild will enter the professional workforce at the end of this year. She has been brought up to expect respect as a person and has been given permission to say all of the above. Knowing her, she will add a few more choice and appropriate lines.
Understand this is not about abuse for the sake of it. This about deconstructing a predator's view of female and reminding them that a woman has a right to not be sexually harassed or assaulted.
"Well, he can ship his mail-order bride back on the boat." - Brogden
I'll keep Helena Carr and ship off Brogden thanks.

I think it was great that Helena Carr did not accept his apology. He obviously meant what he said, so why should she?

It's a greater delight to see her defend herself, be heard and decide.
The two journalists are not so forthright.

Perhaps the usual way of settling this will transpire and we will hear of Brogden taking a punch in the nose from Amanda Cuming's boyfriend.

Call me a cynical bastard and I'm not saying that the comments about Helena Carr weren't disgusting, but the sexual harrassment stuff did seem to go a bit by the wayside didn't it?

The silence on the sexual harassment is indicative of the sexism still present in our society. The unforuntate silence of the journalists is understandable given the reaction by many media commentators who have brushed off Brogden's actions as 'horseplay' or what ever euphemism they deem appropriate. It's hardly a matter of 'poor taste', as some have claimed. Would men who give this lame excuse accept this framing of the debate if the victim was a male who was subject to predatory sexual behaviour by another male? I doubt it.

Brogden's behaviour was a direct physical intrusion on someone who clearly hadn't given an indication that she was receptive to his actions. The kind of mindset behind such actions is hardly one people should be trusting to hold political power (not that Brogden is alone there).

If politicians wish to pontificate about moral and other matters to us plebs and carry on as if they are born to rule us, then they can hardly run away when they prove unable to live up to standards they expect others to live up to. They can also hardly criticise people for being apathetic about politics when politicians of all stripes repeatedly show themselves to be unable to live up to the ethical standards that we are expected to conform to in our own public and private spheres.

Thanks for the laugh when I read the dogbreath title, thanks for the Boaedicca Iron pic. Today bloggers various are saying 'back off with the comments because of the wrist thing' and I do not agree. Suicide is very selfish. what a pig to think only of escape for himself and not to think of his son. Listen carefully Aspiring Leaders, I will zay zis only once ' when you have been elected you must not get drunk, you must not say nasty things about the FAMILY of colleagues'. Broggy has revealed what he is underneath the suit. no sympathy here.
