I love my job it's the work I hate

GetUp! is an online organisation that inspires voters to think up their own campaign ideas and lobby politicians by email and SMS.

In a display of profound ignorance of both the responsibility inherent in holding a public office and what spam actually is, Andrew Robb Liberal backbencher told all voters exactly how he wants his work day to progress and who he thinks is responsible for the terrible botheration that will ensue from GetUp!'s presence
"”There are hundreds of emails arriving in Senator's offices. They're beside themselves, just to clear the screen. They get back to their office from meetings looking for important communications from whoever, and they're confronted with screen after screen of these emails, in some cases over 200 emails. This is highly irresponsible, this is spam, this is spam."”
"It's first and foremost, let's not mince words, it is an anti-Government group and it's not there to keep us accountable. It's there to run an alternative policy agenda. It's a front for the Labor Party, it's a political front. They're quite entitled to do it, it's a free country, but it's a political front. That's what it is."
Two points Andrew.
1. The labor party is far too unimaginative for this venture and
2. Politicians cannot possibly expect not to get unsolicited communication including e-mails from their constituents. Such voter concern is not spam.

I cannot think of a better reason for Getup! than the presence of such a lazy, uninformed, unrepresentative politician.

Yep, Suki, it's abundently clear that the Lieberals don't want to be held accountable for their actions. They work for themselves, not us- and it's time to hold them up- noisily- until they get the motherfucking message.

But its IS spam. Its a campaign to send identical or similar emails to as many people as possible to hound them into capitulation.

Apart from the hysterical "its an ALP front" staement, hes completely right. How the hell are you supposed to get work done if you get hundreds of emails, few of which are actually constructive.

If I was an MP it would be my policy to delete on sight any emails that looked like they were part of a mass campaign, and then completely ignore the message.

If they cant get their point across maturely, screw them.

Nic, 'spam' is unsolicited bulk email from a single source. All those hundreds of emails ducted via GetUp have an individual, sentient voter behind them.

If they are in fact answerable to the people, politicians must naturally and reasonably expect unsolicited contacts. It's pretty hard for them to reasonably claim GetUp mails are 'spam' without looking arbitrary and capricious.

The content of the emails from GetUp may in part contain preformatted text, but the voter can certainly add their own text if they so choose. If pollies like Robb choose to ignore these emails, they're not just ignoring GetUp.

MPs who find it convenient to ignore what they don't want to hear in emails will have the issue brought to their notice by other means, be that the ballot box or other protest means. If there's no political opposition inside Parliament, it'll come from elsewhere.

Moreover, if the Libbies are going to have a bully majority, they have to expect that they will be lobbied. Does no good for the politically aggrieved to apply pressure to parties who don't have the votes, does it?

Pollies need to wake up and smell the new millennium. They can either respond to voter concerns via email or prepare for the people they ignore to be seen on the evening news, waving signs in front of their offices. Not a good look.

Neither is your knee-jerk reaction, Nic...

I have emailed my Labor Federal Member and received a reply. Some time later when I saw her in person and remarked that I was impressed, she said: I reply to all my correspondences".
Now, how come this rude Liberal does not, like me, have more than one email address? I have one for friends and one public. It is that simple.

*if* you were an MP how would you prefer that your constituents inform you of their concerns seeing that by your definition e-mail is immature voting you out?

a beautifully crafted comment.

how much does this guy not know about new media and how to work it!

Weez, Suki, Id prefer to get emails from people who had actually thought about the subject at hand and were not all spouting exactly the same message, as instructed by some organisation. It basiclaly becomes scam if its a mass campaign of unthinking people sending the same crap to one person.

People who take the time to actually put their own thoughts into writing their email, and being constructive, which a mass campaign is anything but, would be rewarded with having their email taken seriously and possibly a proper reply, depending on time constraints.

I mean really, why should an MP have to wade through hundreds of emails saying basically the same thing, from people who arent even thinking very much about what they are writing? They have other things to do too.

Using your logic, 1000 protesters all holding the same banner reading "No Blood for Oil" outside an MP's office at the same time should also be ignored.
*1000 people all at once = your view of laziness
*Banners are a mass print run = e-mail mass cut and paste
*Outside MP's office = MP's inbox

Have you ever received a response letter from a politician nic? It's a photocopy of a media release with Dear Suki written on it by a staffer.

It's 2005!
This is how voters will be communicating.
